The Experience
This week, I focused on selecting suitable locations in Auckland CBD for placing my interactive installation. I identified five potential sites and evaluated them based on specific criteria: audience flow, surrounding environment, safety, accessibility, permits and regulations, interactive opportunities, and environmental considerations. I also used an Impact/Effort Matrix to assess the feasibility of my brainstormed ideas. The most feasible and efficient ideas were public art installations, creating a music album from CBD noise samples, and an educational brochure. However, I encountered difficulties in finding a way to integrate these distinct ideas. After a series of reflections, I decided that incorporating an educational app alongside my public art installations, possibly using QR codes for interaction, could provide a cohesive solution.
Reflection in Action
I was trying to achieve a balance between practicality and creativity by selecting the best locations and strategies for my project. I acted based on the assumption that high audience engagement and interactivity would be crucial for the success of my installation. These assumptions led me to focus on places with high foot traffic and accessible areas. The process of decision-making felt overwhelming at times, especially as I struggled to integrate separate ideas into a unified concept. However, when I shared my thoughts with my classmates, they gave positive feedback, which made me feel more confident in my direction.
Theory
This experience taught me the importance of thorough evaluation in the design process, particularly in the early stages. I gained a deeper understanding of how to apply the Impact/Effort Matrix to assess the viability of creative ideas and make more informed decisions. I also learned that combining technology with art can significantly enhance user engagement and offer new ways to connect with the audience. Moving forward, I can apply this knowledge to future projects by considering not only the aesthetic elements but also the practical, interactive components.
Preparation
Next time I face a similar situation, I will introduce evaluation frameworks like the Impact/Effort Matrix earlier in the process to streamline decision-making. I will also consider how different ideas can be integrated from the outset to avoid feeling stuck at later stages. To improve, I will explore more technological tools and interactive platforms that can enhance the user experience. My future strategy will focus on ensuring that each component of my project is well-integrated and offers clear value to the audience.
