The Experience

This week, I further explored the traditional Chinese “fish lantern” technique, using butter paper and wire to craft ocean animal sculptures. I created two sculptures: a dolphin and a jellyfish. I also tested the projection onto these sculptures to evaluate how well the images would display.

However, I encountered a significant issue with how to suspend the sculptures, as my original plan was to hang them from the ceiling. After discussing with Roma about the exhibition space, I learned that hanging the sculptures from the ceiling wouldn’t be feasible, which caused me a lot of stress and self-doubt. While feeling stuck, I found a solution in the form of a simple clothing rack made of bent iron tubes. I purchased one and modified it with wire, enabling me to successfully suspend the sculptures.

Reflection in Action

My goal was to create a visually compelling installation that captures the audience’s attention through movement and light projection. However, I didn’t anticipate the technical challenges of suspension, especially after realizing the exhibition space limitations. I felt deeply frustrated and questioned my ability to solve such problems. Roma’s feedback was essential in making me reconsider how to present my work. The stress made me doubt myself, but discovering the clothing rack was a relief. I felt proud of how I turned a moment of anxiety into a creative solution.

Theory

This experience reinforced the importance of adaptability and creative problem-solving in design. While my initial plan didn’t work, it opened my mind to finding alternative solutions. I also learned that technical constraints, such as space and logistics, play a vital role in how a project comes to life. Reflecting on this, I realized that my positionality—rooted in Chinese traditions and craftsmanship—helped me overcome the obstacle, as the practical skills and problem-solving methods I’ve learned from my culture allowed me to stay resourceful.

Preparation

In the future, I will approach challenges more openly and expect potential obstacles like space limitations. I will also consider how external factors might affect my design earlier in the process. Next time, I will test different hanging methods and equipment before finalizing the design. This experience has taught me to be more proactive in researching creative alternatives and working closely with the exhibition team earlier.
